As Vice President, Brokers, of MSIG Singapore, Kenny Yap seeks new business opportunities, identifies areas of growth and keeps abreast of market developments. He also works with brokers on new opportunities, negotiates risks, rates and excesses, and the types of coverage they would require.
His first job in the insurance industry was in claims, which required a good understanding of legal terms. With his degrees in legal studies and insurance law, it was a perfect fit.
“Sometimes, the career chooses you. It was a natural progression; from my beginnings in claims to underwriting, then business development and management roles. Seventeen years in the insurance industry have given me plenty of learning experiences from underwriting and broker to client perspectives.”
Kenny recalls a case where a mother was unable to claim her son’s medical bills due to injuries sustained during National Service. “As I was working on the case with her broker, she contacted me for further advice. I drafted a letter of demand to the Ministry of Defence and subsequently she got her settlement.”
While Kenny has been with MSIG for less than a year, it’s clear to him it is a company that cares for employees. He says: “We take pride in our people and judging by the number of long-serving staff we have, you know it’s a really good place to work at. And the fact that we’re always looking towards growing together with our people – that’s important too.”
